In the heart of Brisbane, a small Anabaptist church is quietly witnessing to the love of Christ—not through big programs or flashy events, but through simple acts of service, shared meals, and genuine conversations. For a while now, we have worked together and have had the privilege of assisting of providing fresh food to up to 200 people each week—struggling families, pensioners, and the homeless. But what this ministry is about is far more than food.
Each Saturday, we open the doors of a the local church café, which the kind local church allows the use of the building and facilities free of charge. It becomes a place where fresh fruit, vegetables and meat are handed out freely, but more importantly, where warm cups of coffee and heartfelt conversations are shared. In a world where loneliness often goes unnoticed, we’ve found that people need more than just food—they need connection, encouragement, and hope.
Jesus said, “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Matthew 25:35, ESV). This isn’t just a verse we quote; it’s a calling we live out. To help others in need is not merely a good thing—it’s a Christ-like thing. We believe that serving others in this way reflects the heart of our Saviour, who “came not to be served but to serve” (Mark 10:45).
What’s remarkable is that every week, God provides—food comes in freely, the café space remains available, and the volunteers give of their time with joy. We do not rely on great resources, but on a great God. He has made it clear: small churches with big hearts can be used powerfully in His Kingdom.
As we look to the future, our prayer is that more Anabaptist fellowships would catch this vision—not of building large institutions, but of becoming simple communities with open hands and open hearts. In the spirit of Jesus, we are called not only to preach the Gospel but to live it—one meal, one coffee, one conversation at a time.
To God be the glory for what He is doing through His church here in Brisbane. May we continue to walk humbly with Christ and serve boldly in His name.
